Here's a simple fact of life, bills have got to be paid. This site has to be hosted, the domain has to be maintained, and a lot ot time goes into setting the whole thing up and maintaining it, all of which takes money. Getting advertisements onto the site is a way to provide a free service and still get the money needed to keep the thing up and running. A website, like this one, can get these advertisements in a couple of ways, but there are drawbacks to each. They can get seek private advertising through companies one by one to see if there is interest, a time consuming effort but allows for creative control of the website so long as the private advertisers are happy, or the website can take the easier option and appeal to a massive advertising firm to provide the ads directly.

Like many websites, we opted for the easier option to get our advertisements from one of those advising firms, and coincidentally, the one we went with runs the biggest search engine in the world. The downside to going with this option is a loss of some freedom of expression and loss of control over the way your site is run. First example of this is the cookies that come with using this service, a necessary evil to get paid in this way. We have no interest who you are or where you're going or where you've been online at all, we just want to host some games and make some money doing it. To do so, we have to have their cookies on here. Second sacrifice of integrity that websites have to give into is a lack of control of their content. Certain subjects are taboo to these people and if you're found talking about them, no money for you. Luckily, this is an online arcade so we don't really deal with controversial topics.

Lastly, in order to have enough content to justify having advertisements, this firm looks for how many words are written on your site's pages to see if they are substantial enough. It doesn't look for images, doesn't look for game hosting or other interesting stuff like that, just words. This is probably because the firm is run by a search engine company that uses words primary as part of their business model, but I'm not sure. But one thing is sure, there are a lot of pages that talk in circles before ever reaching the point. For instance, you may be looking for a delicious recipe for some key lime pie and once you find a site that offers one, you have to sit through the history of the key lime pie and how the writer of the recipe remembers their grandmother making it for them. Again, this is a necessary evil to get paid, and the best you can do is try to stick the long and meaningless drivel to the bottom of your page where you hope as little people as possible bother to read it.
